Introduction to the book by Durga Ma

My purpose in writing this book was to give an overview of the practice of yoga as it really is. That is to say, I meant to straighten a few things out. When I emerged from a few decades of hermiting and giving my all to the practice of yoga, I began to realize that the world in general had a very limited view of yoga, and only thought of its physical application as an approach to fitness. It is much more than that. The “more” that I speak of has enormous value to anyone wanting to live well, enjoy success, and ultimately, to find true freedom. Who do you know who doesn’t want all this? It is my sincere hope that the contents of this book will make yoga understandable and useful to anyone who does.

In the first part of this book, I have presented an idea that comes from ancient masters who knew how to do extraordinary things, things that most people would not believe possible. Rather than talking about levitation and various other feats of this nature, I have focused on prosperity, which is practical and something we can all use.

The middle portion of the book concerns ten principles based on our true nature, something that is probably more difficult to grasp than levitation because of our identity with our bodies, our personalities and what we do, as who we are. These ten principles are handed down by masters who have indeed mastered them, and are therefore qualified to attest to their veracity. They are the essential foundation for success at anything, whether it be material success or spiritual. So they are well worth knowing and using whatever you hope to accomplish in your life.

In the last portion of the book, I go on to supply practices that can bring you to fulfillment and freedom. It is here that you will be able to put what is being taught in yoga studios as “yoga,” in its proper place. I end with just a taste of extraordinary practices and their effects.

I have done my best to keep things simple, practical and useful for anyone wishing to improve their lives, as well as those who want to better understand the principles that underlie any spiritual path in which they may already be engaged. I also hope to help those on the path called “yoga” (who knows what it was called when it originated so many thousands of years ago?) to see what is behind the practices of that path.

One often finds that teachers assume a great deal on the part of their students, regardless of the subject or skill that is being taught. Once you have a lot of expertise and experience with something, it is easy to fall into this situation without realizing it. I learned this lesson during my time as a music teacher teaching both children and adults. I found that students who came to me having already studied before, some more than others, could play pieces but knew little to nothing about music. I have found that the same is true with spiritual seekers: there is rarely any real understanding of the spiritual path, of meditation, or of other practices. This has taught me to do my best to first teach basic concepts and principles in a way that is useful for students regardless of where they are on their path, and where they want it to take them.

In this book, I hope to have supplied you with knowledge and insights that will carry you forward and add to your success. I wish you a pleasant and rewarding journey, and thank you sincerely for your efforts on your own behalf, for your advancement will positively affect us all.

Namaste (I bow to the Divine One that you really are),
